Many people seem to have an interest in Russia iron – what it is and what it looks like. Over the years a great deal has been published in model railroad magazines and other popular press publications. Unfortunately, a great dea1 of this info has been misguided, based on popular mythology, “assessments” on colors based on ancient black and white photos, and even raw uninformed guesses presented as fact. My goal in this series of posts is to present actual information about Russia iron, including what is known, and what is theorized based on actual evidence and studies of real Russia iron samples. Included will be copies of historical 19th century articles describing Russia iron, results of recent 20th and 21st century scientific examinations of Russia iron samples, and photographs of real Russia iron samples.
